Insurance Claims News Bites

A little round-up of some claims related stories for you;

SWINTON

Insurance broker specialists Swinton Insurance have found that in 2020, their insurers paid out £33 million in home insurance claims. Of this £33m the following losses have accounted for the largest proportions of this:

  • 25% were a result of water escaping pipework or appliances within the home
  • 15% were attributable to accidental damage
  • 13% was caused by fire
  • 7.6% was a result of theft

Head of Product — Home at Swinton Insurance, Anthony Mellor said:

At Swinton, we believe in the importance of maintaining a home and keeping it secured. Having electrics checked, ensuring pipework is insulated correctly and installing security cameras are all ways to prevent claims, allowing for any no-claims discount to build up, resulting in cheaper premiums.

ADMIRAL SEE INCREASE IN PET RELATED CLAIMS

Meanwhile Admiral has reported an increase in accidental damage caused by pets, especially dogs. During lockdown many people who live alone have decided to take on the responsibility of owning a dog, especially as UK legislation on giving tenants the legal right to own a pet is expected to come into force soon – regardl;ess of anything signed in a tenancy agreement.

Claims for damaged TVs and computers are up by a third says Admiral, with pets being the cited cause. Admiral is encouraging their policyholders to spend time and money on dog training, especially for new arrivals to the household.
