Rhydian Jones, motoring expert at Confused.com, explains:“Cars from 2024 are better than ever and are getting more 5-star safety ratings than previous years. This is likely due to the return of quality materials and advancement in technology. 2024 has seen a rise in all sorts of technological advancements, from the shift to more impressive electric cars to autonomous driving capabilities and much more.”

But, which is the safest car brand to choose?
EV-exclusive brands make up 40% of the top five safest car brands
Confused.com, one of the UK’s leading car insurance comparison sites, analysed vehicle safety ratings data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for 2,317 vehicles released since 2014 to rank the safest car manufacturers:
Top 10 car brands with the highest safety scores per car tested – See all 34 brands’ rankings here.
Volvo, Subaru, Tesla, Genesis and Polestar all achieved a 100% safety score, meaning all of their cars received the highest rating of 5-stars for overall vehicle safety.
When it comes to safety, EV brands are leading, with Polestar and Tesla both offering electric vehicles that have received no lower than 5-star safety ratings in the last decade.
Rhydian Jones, motoring expert at Confused.com, says: “EVs generally perform well in crash tests—lacking a heavy front engine allows for more spacious crumple zones and better weight distribution, which can help prevent flipping. Both Tesla and Polestar offer a wide range of safety features, including radars and sensors for detecting external risks and onboard technology to protect you if you do crash.”
“Investing in a car with top-tier safety features isn’t just about peace of mind—it’s about making sure you and your loved ones are protected. And with a safer car, you may also enjoy benefits when it comes to your car insurance. That’s because vehicles with higher safety ratings are often seen as lower risk and generally cheaper to insure [2]. Sometimes though, it can lead to higher claims costs. This is because repairing the safety technology these cars use can be expensive.”
