Parametrix, the leading provider of cloud monitoring, modeling, and insurance services, has estimated the financial loss to US companies arising from the disruption to Amazon Web Service’s (AWS) us-east-1 cloud service region on October 20 2025 at $500 million to $650 million.
The figure is revealed in the report AWS us-east-1 Outage: What Parametrix Monitored in Real Time
Parametrix monitoring data shows that the event unfolded in two distinct critical phases, each with different levels of impact, visibility, and customer experience, the report explains. The first and most severe disruption lasted approximately 2 hours and 36 minutes, and impacted the majority of customers in the region. The second critical phase lasted 7.5 hours, but was more fragmented. The severity of its impact depended heavily on:
● which availability zones within the AWS us-east-1 region were used by the affected customer,
● each organization’s reliance on the “autoscaling” function (which was disrupted), and
● on individual organizations’ operational peak time relative to the time of disruption.
“This was a complex and relatively severe disruption in the largest and most important of the AWS regions,” said Jonathan Hatzor, CEO of Parametrix. “Coverage is clear for our customers, but businesses relying on traditional cyber insurance with a business interruption component may face uncertainty around whether their policies will respond.
“Our monitoring systems detected the incident within seconds, and our response team immediately began assessing its scope and impact. Within hours, we provided our insurer partners, brokers, and clients with a complete, data-driven overview of what had occurred and which customers were affected. Our parametric insurance model was built for moments like this. It responded exactly as intended, ensuring fast, automatic payouts and immediate financial relief for impacted clients.”
He noted that Parametrix cloud outage policies have waiting periods of as little as one hour, but for AWS’s us-east-1 region, are typically three hours or longer. Parametrix has combined the durations of downtime periods when calculating the waiting periods for this event, and will be paying claims this week, he added.
The comprehensive Parametrix event analysis is based on the proprietary network of cloud monitoring systems in the world, including:
● continuous monitoring of over 500 data centers worldwide
● tracking of 7,000+ SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS providers
● analysis of 3,000 historical cloud outage events
● 387 active monitoring points alerting to potential interruptions
● 18.5 billion availability tests conducted annually, and
● 260 billion cloud performance and availability data points analyzed each year.
