The word from Zurich for you;
Zurich Engineering has become the first engineering company to introduce a full range of tailor‑made personal protective equipment (PPE) for women — including 3‑in‑1 jackets, hi‑vis clothing, trousers, and safety harnesses. The aim is to close the long‑standing gender PPE gap, addressing the discomfort and safety risks caused by ill‑fitting, male‑designed equipment that can discourage women from entering or remaining in the profession.
This comes at a timely moment: BSI has just launched a new British Standard to address critical gaps in how PPE fits women and to improve workplace safety across UK industries: BSI launches a new standard to address critical gaps in PPE fit, retain skilled workers, and boost workplace safety | BSI.
I have three strong case studies and photos, from female engineer surveyors who have struggled with PPE in the past, from harnesses that don’t fit to jackets that gape or trousers that are too long. Each can speak to the difference the new female‑fit design has made to their comfort, confidence and ability to focus on the job. Please find attached.
Iain Brumpton, Head of Zurich Engineering said:
“Zurich Engineering is committed to raising the bar for workplace safety and inclusivity. By removing barriers to entry and retention, we’re demonstrating our dedication to diversity, equality and the wellbeing of every employee.
“It’s disappointing to note that high‑quality PPE designed specifically for women isn’t always readily available, so that’s why we partnered with a specialist supplier to ensure our female colleagues receive PPE that truly fits their needs.
“We’re also strengthening our commitment to sustainability by introducing new environmentally conscious PPE options — including safety glasses made from recycled fishing nets and hi‑vis vests crafted from recycled plastic bottles.”
