Humans have a unique ability to adapt to new technologies. However, safety and trust are key if the general public is going to fully embrace self-driving features and fully automated vehicles.

TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) is hard at work developing a standardised safety case framework for driverless vehicles across the UK. Currently involved in many connected and automated vehicle (CAV) trials in the UK, TRL is at the heart of developing robust safety cases for vehicles that are fit for an automated future.

The development of safety cases for trials of automated vehicles in public spaces and on UK roads is being championed by TRL; helping to ensure trials are conducted safely and demonstrate compliance with the CCAV Code of Practice.

TRL’s safety case frameworks have been developed for several UK CAV test beds, including London’s Smart Mobility Living Lab (SMLL) and automated vehicle trials such as the GATEway project, DRIVEN, Move UK, StreetWise and Helm UK.
