Demonstrating its longstanding commitment to tackling road safety issues, leading UK telematics provider, insurethebox, has renewed its sponsorship of Learn2Live a regional partnership saving lives by targeting young people aged 16-17 with quality road safety education initiatives.

The sponsorship will fund events aimed young drivers living in Devon and Cornwall. Through educational events involving presentations from real life experiences, Learn2Live aims to challenge risk taking, negative driving behaviour and negative peer pressure, which leads to inappropriate and risky behaviour.

The theatre style presentation at each event comprises of a short film, depicting a group of friends going out for a night, having a collision and the sad consequences including the death of one of the friends.  It also shows the aftermath, with the family being informed by the Police Family Liaison Officer, illustrating the true impact of a single collision.

The film is interspersed with speakers including members of the emergency services and members of the public who have had a member of their family killed or seriously injured in a collision.  Each speaker explains factors that led to the cause of the collision and they describe coping strategies that students can use to reduce their risk of being involved in a similar situation. Students are encouraged to formulate personal SAFE PLANS to keep themselves and their friends safe. Each event closes with a very personal and powerful presentation by someone who has either been involved  in a road traffic collision or from a family coping with the loss of a loved one.

Simon Rewell, Road Safety Manager at insurethebox, commented: “With its aim and objectives in line with our mission to encourage safer driving among young motorists by educating them about their behaviour and empowering them to drive more safely we are absolutely delighted to continue our sponsorship of Learn2Live. We have supported this West Country partnership since 2012; as a result of our support, over 100,000 students have received good quality road safety education and I’m sure lives have been saved and serious injuries avoided as a result.”

An evaluation of the events showed improved attitudes and behavioural intentions towards safe driving is most pronounced immediately after the event, but also persist 3 months later.

Nigel Flower, Safer Travel Strategy & Programme Officer added: “We are exceedingly grateful for the continued support of insurethebox to enable our valuable education programme to continue. The reason why Learn2Live is so impactful is because students witness and understand the true impact of a single road traffic collision and the effect it has on all of those involved.”

Future dates for the programme this year are:

Exeter University: 17th October 2019

South Devon College (only open to South Devon College students): 29th, 30th, 31st October 2019
