Islington’s Renault Zoe Purchases Highlight Insurer Opportunities

The Renault ZOE is helping Islington Council to continue its drive to both create a greener fleet, which highlights the switch from petrol/diesel to electric that underpins public sector procurement right now. Insurers and brokers need to tailor new, flexible policies for the public sector what offer multiple driver options, login via smartphone telematics app, FNOL back-up, legal etc in one wraparound package.

The council aims to switch more vehicles within its 500-strong fleet – spanning cars and small vans through to street sweeping vehicles and 26-tonne refuse and recycling collection vehicles – to electric. Councils across the UK all support enhanced air quality and climate crisis targets, so expect a flood of new vehicles appearing on urban streets.

As vehicle tech offers more semi-autonomous operation, there is a long term partnership opportunity for insurers to effectively manage their fleet for them, at least in terms of vehicle location, driving styles, accident logs, hazardous cargo or passenger risk in vehicles like minibuses for example. Telematics is the key to outsourcing much of this data gathering on behalf of public sector bodies.

Cities like Manchester, London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Bristol are likely to be very receptive to an off-the-shelf solution for fleet insurance, breakdown, tracking etc.
