Trends: Lack of Gadget Cover on Travel Policies in Focus

It’s a fact that headphones, smartphones, laptops and more gadgets are often part of the handluggage on many trips overseas. Whether it’s business or a holiday break, we need tech. But many consumers are not aware of any limits on travel insurance policies, some reject travel insurance full stop. Here’s some survey results to add to your data spreadsheets;

Nearly half (48%) of British holidaymakers are travelling abroad with more than £500 worth of technology per person – unsurprisingly so, as we’ve come to rely on technology in all aspects of our lives and are reluctant to part with our much-loved gadgets whilst we soak up the sun. Nearly 18% of us have taken more than £1000 worth of tech abroad to help us stay connected with the world and our friends and family back at home.

New research from Staysure, whose new Signature policy launched in May this year, includes up to £2,000 per person for gadget cover, has shown that while UK travellers may be carrying more tech than ever, few are checking to see if it’s insured when they go away.

Nearly half (45%) of the 2000 respondents questioned in the online poll claim to be travelling with 3-4 gadgets per person, including smart phones, laptops, tablets, and cameras. And while abroad, our phones are even more important to us to capture those treasured memories, with only 11% of us not taking a phone on holiday, while 61% have said they couldn’t travel without any tech at all!

Not surprisingly, the end of Covid-era travel restrictions has people itching to get away this summer, but the report also revealed that many Brits worryingly would consider doing so without any travel insurance cover at all, which could lead to a false economy should something go wrong.

TRAVEL INSURANCE? TALK TO THE HAND BRO…

A quarter (25%) of those polled said they would consider heading abroad without having travel insurance, rising to more than three in ten (32%) among men and a staggering 41% of 16–34-year-olds considering holidaying without cover.

While the cost-of-living pressures are understandably a factor here, without a travel insurance policy forming part of your overall holiday budget, Brits could leave themselves wide open to unexpected medical bills should they become ill abroad.  Travel insurance is there to protect you and your holiday investment, including emergency medical costs, cancellation, repatriation, baggage and other unforeseen situations that may happen before departure, or while you are away.

Furthermore, with technology being an essential part of any holiday it’s not surprising that 53% of respondents said they would feel ‘annoyed’ if they damaged a gadget on holiday.  Nearly 1 in 5 (20%) of us have lost or damaged a gadget while overseas and more than half (53%) of respondents didn’t see gadget cover as a priority, rising to 64% among the over-55s.

Gadgets have become irreplaceable for many travellers, with the report revealing that almost three in ten (28%) of us are more worried about losing our phone than our purse or wallet (13%), with nearly (4%) saying they would rather lose their luggage than their mobile!

Among those who would consider not having travel insurance for a trip, it was the type of holiday they were planning that made them feel insurance wasn’t important, with nearly half saying they wouldn’t consider it for a weekend away abroad (49%) or a foreign city break (47%) and 32% felt it was unnecessary for a beach holiday.

Staysure’s Chief Marketing Officer, Brad May says:

“It’s not surprising the research shows that our tech plays such a big part in our holidays.  – we all use technology one way or another in our everyday lives so why should holidays be any different.  Many of us just couldn’t live without gadgets, and even though they are so essential, we simply underestimate how much we depend upon them.  Damaging or losing a gadget on holiday can be frustrating that’s why our new Signature Travel Insurance policy offers customers up to £2000 per person for gadgets as standard, including cover for liquid & accidental damage, loss and theft.

It’s significant to see that some people don’t consider buying travel insurance at all, let alone cover their gadgets.  If something goes wrong before you depart or while you’re away it can totally derail your holiday leaving you out of pocket. Having a good travel insurance policy in place to protect you and your trip can make or break your holiday, and here at Staysure we’re committed to supporting our customers every step of the way!”
