Top Ten EVs by Sales & Lease Deals in the UK in 2023

If you’re in the Motor insurance sector then it’s good to know which are the top-selling, or more accurately, leased EVs in the UK. Here’s the data from Howden;

The UK’s favourite electric car model is the Toyota Yaris, (below) new research has found. UK drivers licensed 33,860 of them for the first time between January 1st and September 30th of 2023. Nissan Qashqai inches closely behind with 32,582 cars newly registered in the first three quarters of 2023.

Analysis of the latest official licensing data of cars registered for the first time in the UK suggests that there are three main cleaner alternatives to fossil-fuelled vehicles preferred by UK drivers: petrol-based hybrid electric vehicles (48.4%), battery electric vehicles (34.9%) and petrol-based plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (14.4%).

This is according to a new study from Howden Insurance, which analysed the latest data from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and the UK Department for Transport. It covers statistics on generic car models that have been officially registered for the first time in the UK between January 1st and September 30th, 2023. The study focuses on cars powered by fuels other than solely petrol, diesel or gas.

Favourite electric car models

There were 682,649 electric vehicles licensed for the first time in the UK between January and September 2023. This represents 46% of all the 1,482,297 vehicles first registered in the UK in the same period.

Toyota Yaris ranked first overall among all types of electric vehicles, with 33,860 cars licensed for the first time in the UK within nine months. This accounts for nearly 5% of all electric cars licensed in the UK for the first time within this period.

Nissan Qashqai ranked closely behind in second place, with 32,582 (4.77%) eco-conscious drivers opting for it. It is followed by Tesla Model Y with a 4.13% market share, and Hyundai Tucson, preferred by 20,775 (2.6%) of drivers seeking an electric alternative. Kia Sportage, Volvo XC40, Ford Puma, MG 4, Kia Niro and Toyota C-HR also made the top ten UK’s favourite electric cars.

HYBRID EV/PETROL DATA – YARIS WINS AGAIN

Among all electric cars licensed for the first time in the first nine months of 2023, 330,362 UK drivers preferred hybrid electric cars, specifically with petrol engines. They account for 48.4% of all low-emission cars first registered in the UK in this period. Though still emitting CO2, hybrid cars, whether propelled by a petrol or diesel engine, charge their batteries while the vehicle runs on fuel.

Toyota reigns supreme with three models in the top ten petrol hybrid electric cars recently licensed in the UK for the first time. The Yaris ranked first, while the C-HR and the Corolla ranked sixth and seventh.

Every tenth hybrid petrol car licensed for the first time in the UK in the first nine months of 2023 is either a Toyota Yaris or a Nissan Qashqai, with the former at a slight advantage. Hybrid petrol models of the Ford Puma, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tuscon each rank around the 5 per cent market share within this fuel category
