CMT Project Highlights Benefits of Smoother Driving

Fuel saving is a good thing for the planet in general and the spin-off benefits of smoother driving tend to be fewer accidents too – it’s all good, as CMT notes;

Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics service provider, says driving scores could help people reduce their fuel costs and carbon footprint. Fuel Score and Eco Score are fully integrated app experiences available via CMT’s DriveWell Go app framework and as an SDK integration. Auto insurers, automakers, gig companies, and fleets can use the scores together or separately depending on their goals and customer preferences. There is no need to integrate the scores with an insurer’s policy system.

The new driving scores calculate and summarize a driver’s fuel efficiency and CO₂ emissions. People can learn to drive more efficiently, save money at the pump, and reduce their environmental impact. The top 5% of drivers from CMT’s European pilot programs have saved over €400 in annual fuel costs and reduced emissions by 30%.

People worldwide want to know how driving affects fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. According to CMT surveys spanning over 3,500 respondents, 79% of US drivers said they would use an insurance app that reveals their impact on fuel and emissions. Across Europe, that figure was nearly identical at 77%.

“At LAQO, rising fuel prices and environmental impact are urgent concerns for our customers,” said Ana Zovko, Chief IT/Digital Officer Croatia Osiguranje and Managing director of LAQO. “Through our LaqoPrevent program — which is powered by CMT — we empower clients to monitor and reduce their carbon footprint. The program rewards reductions in emissions, resulting in engagement levels that are higher than typical UBI programs.”

In CMT pilot programs, insurers have seen heightened engagement with Eco Score and Fuel Score. The driver engagement results from an Eco Score pilot program, which rewarded drivers for reducing their carbon footprint, were significantly higher than comparable UBI programs. Over 75% of drivers opened the app at least twice a week. 17% opened it three times or more.

“At CMT, we’re driven to make mobility safe and sustainable. Our Eco Score and Fuel Score are key to this effort, providing drivers with feedback that induces better driving,” said Hari Balakrishnan, co-founder and CTO of CMT. “These scores enable our customers to create new and engaging experiences for their drivers, helping them save on fuel costs and reduce their carbon footprint.”

CMT’s research shows that telematics program engagement reduces road risk. In a study that analyzed 100,000 drivers across multiple telematics programs, CMT found that the riskiest drivers with the highest engagement improved distracted driving by 20%, hard braking by 9%, and speeding by 27%. That same study also showed that these drivers reduced their chance of a bodily injury claim by 5.5%. Hard braking and speeding directly impact fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

“Safer driving translates to more efficient fuel use and a lower carbon footprint, and vice versa,” said Lisa Pinals, CMT data scientist and lead researcher for Eco Score and Fuel Score. “We’re excited to get these scores into the hands of drivers everywhere to help them see how safer driving can lead to fuel savings.”
