One Sure Tracks Collisions Per Head of Population in England

The latest dive into public sector collision data, for what it’s worth. This study is by One Sure and it tracks the collisions per town or city. Of course population does not equal drivers, so stats for London are skewed by the reality that most people living there do not drive. Neither does the study overlay the number of banned drivers per town, or the age demographics, with younger towns or cities obviously more likely to produce more risk-takers on the roads than places where the average age is say 40 plus.

Anyway, here’s the raw data;

A new study has revealed the areas in England with the most reckless drivers, with Doncaster taking the top spot.

Motor trade insurance experts at One Sure Insurance analysed the latest data from the Home Office on reported road collisions in England in 2022. The total number of collisions was weighed against the population in each area to determine the final ranking. Doncaster ranks at the top, with 503.62 road collisions per 100,000 people in 2022. The area experienced 553 total collisions during the year.

Coming in second is Rotherham, with 371.95 accidents per 100,000 inhabitants. Rotherham reported 408 road collisions throughout the year. Third in the ranking is Kingston upon Hull, with 652 reported road collisions in 2022. Against the population, that equates to 250.58 collisions per 100,000 people. Stockton-on-Tees places fourth, with 247.80 road accidents per 100,000 residents. In 2022, Stockton-on-Tees witnessed 205 collisions.

In fifth comes London, with a staggering 21,792 road collisions in 2022 – the highest among the top ten. Against the population, London experienced 247.64 collisions per 100,000 inhabitants.

RURAL AREAS ARE SAFER, MAYBE

At the other end of the scale, Staffordshire has the least reckless drivers, with 35.88 road accidents per 100,000 people. The county reported 409 collisions throughout the year in 2022.  Stoke-on-Trent comes in second, with 39.36 accidents per 100,000 people and 98 reported road collisions throughout the year – this being the second lowest number of collisions among the ranking for the least reckless drivers.

Third on the list is Bedfordshire, with 48.07 collisions per 100,000 residents. The area had a total of 328 road collisions in 2022. In fourth place is County Durham, with 507 road collisions during the year. Against the population, that equates to 58.17 accidents per 100,000 inhabitants in the area.

Rutland ranks fifth, with 58.32 road collisions per 100,000 people. The area reported 24 total collisions in 2022 – the lowest among the top ten.
