Honda and other motorcycle manufacturers are building small sized, pure battery powered two wheelers.
The problem for many delivery companies however is range, especially when you factor in bad weather and regular stop-start trips. Can a typical 125cc sized EV scooter carry out a late night shift for Uber Eats in London on a full charge? No, is the answer you are looking for.
But Honda are looking at swap-out battery pack systems and for insurance brands already in the freelance delivery market segment, this might be a long term trend that makes EV bikes insurable, compared to ICE vehicles, which politicians and climate activists hate to see.
It’s an intersting solution, which could apply to e-bicycles too. But there are fire, charger, payment point tech and other infrastructure considerations when it comes to on-street swap-points of course. Here’s the word;
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (Honda) and GoCimo (formerly known as GoCiklo) (CEO: Mattias Tingvall), a Swedish start-up that operates rental and sharing service of electric motorcycles with swappable batteries, will commence a battery sharing service verification test in Malmö, Sweden in February 2025 for a period of one year.
The purpose of the test is to verify the acceptability of a battery sharing service in Europe, the suitability of a new battery exchange station, and the business feasibility of the service.
The test will consist of Honda Power Pack Exchanger e: battery exchange stations, located at three locations in Malmö, to be used to exchange Honda Mobile Power Pack e: batteries for the EM1 e: electric scooter sold by Honda in Europe.
