Brits Would Grab Pets and Smartphones as They Fled a Home Emergency

If the worst happened what would you grab as you ran from your home? Well, aside from family members, pets and phones have been revealed to be the things that Brits would prioritise rescuing from their home in an emergency, according to new research.

Prioritising a family member topped the list (48%), followed by pets (36%), mobile phones (30%) and money (22%).

The data from specialist home insurance provider, Homeprotect, found that UK adults would sooner save their mobile phone than money, computers or jewellery, whilst photographs were revealed to be more precious than electronics or valuable watches.

One of the most striking generational findings was that almost all age groups would save their pets before their phones—except those aged 18-24. For this younger demographic, their phones were ranked as the second most important possession, just behind family members.

There were also gender differences: while men placed money as the fourth most important item to save (23%), women prioritised photographs (24%).

Chief Customer Officer at specialist home insurer Homeprotect, David Joyson, said: “No one wants to think about having to leave their home due to an emergency and while this kind of situation is rare, it is something that could unfortunately happen to any of us – for example because of flooding or a house fire – so it’s important to scenario plan to work out your potential escape routes, to avoid putting you, and anyone you live with, in danger.

“It’s also worth making sure that any cherished items are protected, by ensuring you have comprehensive up-to-date contents insurance. Whilst heirlooms or older items may already be on your contents policy, it’s worth checking that you have also included any newer items you have bought more recently.

“Some items, usually of a certain value, need to be ‘specified’ as individual items – so it’s worth taking a few minutes to read your policy booklet to make sure you have the right cover in place. This gives you the best chance of being able to replace the things you value most at home if you needed to.”

Homeprotect specialises in buildings and contents insurance for a wide range of properties, including those which may struggle to secure policies with traditional providers.
