Wiser Academy Welcomes Govt Initiatives on Apprenticeships

The latest from the Wiser Academy;

Wiser Academy, the award-winning provider of insurance training and development, welcomes the Government’s recent apprenticeship reforms as a positive step toward removing barriers to entry and upskilling the workforce.

However, Lauren Pullen, director of operations, warns that while these changes may boost short-term growth, a long-term strategy is needed to ensure the UK economy does not suffer from skills shortages in the future.

The Government has announced significant policy changes, including:

  • Removal of Maths and English Functional Skills requirements for apprentices aged 19 and above. Previously, apprentices who could not provide evidence of GCSE grades C (or equivalent) had to complete additional Maths and English qualifications alongside their apprenticeship.

  • Reduction in minimum apprenticeship duration from 12 months and one week to as short as eight months for certain qualifications, aimed at addressing skill shortages in key industries.

The reforms are expected to encourage at least 10,000 additional apprenticeships across the UK, although Wiser Academy believes the impact will be far greater.

A welcome but short-term fix

Lauren said the reforms will improve accessibility for working professionals looking to upskill.

“This is a welcome move,” Lauren said. “Many professionals in the insurance industry have avoided apprenticeships because of the additional requirement to complete Maths and English qualifications, even when these skills weren’t directly relevant to their job.

“Removing this hurdle will encourage more people to upskill and develop modern competencies. But while this will help short-term growth, it’s a quick fix rather than a long-term solution.”

Lauren warned that removing foundational learning could create skill gaps in the future.

“Literacy and numeracy are life skills,” she said. “If someone is given the opportunity to improve them for free, they should take it. We are in a volatile political environment where government policies change rapidly. A new administration could reverse this decision in a year, leaving learners without the necessary qualifications. Wiser Academy’s stance is clear: we will continue to offer support for Maths and English development, regardless of policy changes.”

The impact on the insurance industry

The UK insurance sector has struggled with skills shortages for years. A recent Skills England report highlighted that many core insurance roles, including underwriting and claims management, face a critical or high demand for skilled workers.

Lauren believes that these apprenticeship reforms could significantly impact the insurance sector.

“We should see a rise in enrolments for insurance apprenticeships as a result of these reforms,” she said. “However, apprenticeships must remain comprehensive and valuable to businesses. The reduction in apprenticeship duration needs to be carefully monitored.

“Shorter apprenticeships might work for certain industries, but in insurance, we must ensure that professional qualifications continue to be robust and meaningful.”

Wiser Academy will continue to advocate for reforms that support both businesses and learners, ensuring that any changes contribute to a sustainable, long-term solution to the insurance skills crisis.
