Thatcham Launches EV Alert to Try and Raise Standards on Repairs

State and insurance industry backed automotive risk intelligence company Thatcham Research, has launched its new EV Alert service to support the safe and efficient repair of Electric Vehicles (EVs).

It’s a smart move and hopefully the insurance sector will invest in new repair networks for electric vehicles and salvage. If EV really is the mass transport future, then the existing petrol/diesel car repair network simply cannot cope with a rapid transition to service and repair on pure EV cars and vans. 

The obvious solution is that some of the big UK insurance brands invest in wholly owned repair networks, rather than upping the divi to shareholders as they post billions in annual profits. Unpopular perhaps, but arguably a wiser survival strategy long term. That way insurers can pool data on repair volumes by make and model, typical costs, labour rates etc. That in itself would help slow claims inflation, since insurers would not be so vulnerable to third party price rises in accident repair, recovery etc.

At the end of February 2025, there were almost 2.2 million EVs on UK roads, making up almost 7% of the car parc. The increasing presence of EVs presents unique challenges to bodyshops, including heightened technical and safety considerations.

EV Alert addresses these challenges by highlighting High Voltage (HV) systems before any repair work begins, allowing VDAs and repair teams to accurately triage vehicles and assess the required resources, skills, health and safe requirements, and correct procedures to carry out safe repairs.
