AXA UK Calls For Minister For Resilience

The latest from AXA UK;

Following publication of the ABI’s data on subsidence today (Insurance support tops £150 million for homes affected by subsidence | ABI), AXA UK has renewed its call on the Government to appoint a Minister for Resilience to focus on issues including extreme heat and flooding. Labour committed to the appointment while in Opposition and AXA UK believes it is crucial to protect homes and commercial premises from the impact of climate change and to ensure resilience is factored into future building projects – including the Government’s plans for 1.5m new homes over the next parliament,

AXA UK conducted extensive research last year on this topic and the results of public polling about the impact of extreme heat on their properties and public awareness of the issues highlighted a lack of knowledge and preparedness.

  • More than half (52%) of people polled said their homes weren’t equipped to deal with the impact of flooding or extreme heat, a lesser-known risk that can cause cracking and subsidence
  • 48% said they had never checked if their home insurance covered them for the effects of extreme heat

When the report was launched in November last year, Tara Foley, CEO of AXA UK & Ireland said: “We know that behind every headline about extreme weather is a human story, and at AXA UK we want to protect our customers from the impact of climate change and help them prepare for the future.

“This report maps out areas in England most at risk from flooding and extreme heat and calculates the associated costs, enabling decision makers to identify where future resources should be targeted and where urgent investment is needed.

“We support the Government’s ambitious housebuilding target but believe we must ensure existing homes are resilient and future-proofed, and new properties are not built in flood-prone areas. This is crucial to protect our future for generations to come.”
