The word from Sixfold who have a new AI powered underwriter ready to deploy;
In January, Sixfold raised a $30 million Series B to build the AI Underwriter. Today, it is here. The AI Underwriter is an underwriting agent that never forgets a broker, a risk, or a lesson learned, and knows the next best action to take on every case.
Built on three years of work alongside some of the world’s largest insurers, it applies everything each carrier’s team knows to every submission. Day one it arrives with deep underwriting knowledge. From there it learns the carrier’s business, and never stops.
When a submission comes in, the AI Underwriter extracts and cleans all data, checks what’s missing, evaluates appetite and portfolio fit, and draws on what it has learned about that broker and risk class. It then produces a recommendation, explains its rationale, and suggests to the underwriter the next best action to move the case forward. The AI Underwriter does more than evaluate the risk. It helps underwriters decide whether this is the right risk, from the right broker, for their book right now.
“What does a great underwriter actually need the moment they receive a submission? They don’t need a digitized version of the application, broker documents moved from their inbox to another system, or a dashboard with data that was current last week. Instead, our users told us that what they need is to understand the risk in the full context of their current book, the broker, and the guidelines, and to be presented with a clear next step. Right there, at the moment a decision is being made. That is what the AI Underwriter does.” — Alex Schmelkin, Founder and CEO, Sixfold
Sixfold works with global insurers across Property & Casualty and Life & Health. Since launching in 2023, Sixfold has processed more than 1.5 million submissions across 50+ lines of business in North America, South America, the UK, Europe, and Australia. Its customers represent $270 billion in gross written premium and include Skyward Specialty, Zurich, Generali GC&C, Guardian, AXIS, and New York Life.
The payoff shows up across the book. Sixfold customers have historically seen 50% to 97% faster processing, hit ratios up 15% or more, and up to 30% increase in GWP per underwriter. Over time, loss and expense ratios improve, underwriters take on more, and the job gets better for the people doing it.
The first iteration of Sixfold’s technology was about providing relevant insights. Gather the submission data, enrich it, fill the gaps, and point to what matters based on appetite fit. Sixfold built the AI Underwriter to do more.
It takes action on submissions instead of just preparing them, and it brings in the wider context an underwriter needs: the broker, the portfolio, the fit with the current book. Underwriters provide direction, judgment, and oversight, guide exceptions, and remain accountable for how the AI Underwriter is governed. When configured for straight through processing, the AI Underwriter produces quote and bind ready materials for a broker or customer to accept.

At the center of the AI Underwriter is Sixfold’s Underwriting Brain. It arrives already fluent in underwriting, trained on the standards behind leading professional credentials, underwriter reasoning patterns, and a curated ground truth library across lines and industries. That shared foundation is how every customer sees value on day one. Everything after that belongs to the carrier alone.
The AI Underwriter learns one carrier’s book, appetite, and guidelines, and every decision its underwriters make feeds back into that carrier’s instance. One carrier’s book never trains another’s. After a year, each carrier holds institutional memory built entirely from its own business, the kind no CRM, policy system, or workflow tool was ever built to capture.
Before today’s launch, a select group of insurers worked with the AI Underwriter on live submissions. At Skyward Specialty, early results show that the AI Underwriter performed the majority of the underwriting analysis needed to evaluate submissions, helping underwriters quote better risks, faster, with more consistent judgment across the book.
The AI Underwriter does not just summarize what you are looking at, it gives you a point of view and a clear path forward. For more junior underwriters it’s a powerful companion that gives them the perspectives of a more experienced underwriter and accelerates their development. Even veteran underwriters who are a little more skeptical of new technology, see the tool as an added layer of intelligence. Plus, the ability to fully examine a submission and make better, more confident decisions without even leaving the tool is a huge benefit. The entire team is excited to work with it.”
— Melissa Butt, Vice President E&S Brokerage, Property, Skyward Specialty
“For us, being agile and responsive is critical and we need partners who can scale alongside our business while providing efficiencies that allow our underwriters to focus on what they do best. With Sixfold we are building what we believe the future of underwriting looks like. By incorporating Sixfold’s AI Underwriter into our bionic underwriting approach we are equipping our underwriters with richer context that enhances their decision-making while keeping human expertise firmly at the center of the process.”
— John Burkhart, President US Property & Casualty, Skyward Specialty
Sixfold customers see 90% or higher underwriting adoption, measured as actual users vs expected. The reason is consistent: underwriters use what works for them. The AI Underwriter integrates directly into the systems teams already use, and each carrier decides how much of the work the agent handles autonomously.
“Sixfold helps us quote risks in minutes instead of days or in some cases weeks. The work gets better for our underwriters. What sets Sixfold apart is how they build their product, alongside underwriters, shaped by how the job really works. That is why we believe they are building the future of underwriting”
— Matthew Richardson, Global Head of Operations & IT, Generali GC&C
“We recently asked more than 500 underwriters and executives what they wished underwriters had more time for. The answer was the same across the board: the complex risks, the unusual ones, the cases that need real expertise and creativity. The best underwriting teams five years from now will be the ones where underwriters spend that expertise on the work only they can do. The AI Underwriter works every case as a colleague, so an underwriter walks into a hard to place risk already knowing the broker, the book, and the guidelines, and can negotiate from there.”
— Jane Tran, Co-founder and COO, Sixfold Continues…
Deployment at scale requires more than a strong product. Sixfold has built its responsible AI program from the ground up to include governance controls, regulatory relationships, and a track record that gives carrier risk and compliance teams what they need to deploy and scale across geographies with confidence.
The AI Underwriter is available today for P&C insurers.
