Zixty Working With DVSA on Theory Test App Project

The word from Zixty as they start working with the DVSA;

Zixty, the UK short-term car insurance and technology provider, has announced an exclusive long term deal with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), designed to support learner drivers, supervising parents and newly qualified motorists.

The partnership will see Zixty featured exclusively on the official DVSA Theory Test app as well as other DVSA channels. Crucially, the deal will give Zixty access to the Theory Test App’s 300,000+ monthly active users.

This is the first time that the DVSA has taken steps to partner with an insurer in this way on its official app.  The move reflects the demand for insurance to support the growing importance of ‘private driving practice’ as learner drivers look for more flexible and affordable ways to learn and gain driving experience before test day.

Average lesson costs have increased substantially in recent years, with many learners facing total learning costs well above £1,500 and, according to some estimates, over £2,400 in 2026 (Driving Instructors Association).

With the cost of professional driving lessons placing pressure on young people and their families, more learners are supplementing formal tuition with supervised practice in a parent’s, relative’s or friend’s car. Interestingly, government statistics show that the average pass rate is 61.7% for learners who said they did not undertake private practice compared to 63.5% for learners who did.

Zixty’s flexible learner driver insurance allows learners to get cover from as little as one hour up to 28 days, helping them gain additional experience without requiring the vehicle owner to amend or risk their annual policy.

The DVSA relationship represents a significant milestone for Zixty as it continues to grow its presence in the learner and young driver market, combining flexible insurance with technology designed to improve driver behaviour and support road safety.

Andy James, Zixty CEO, said: “We are incredibly proud to be working with DVSA in this exclusive long term deal. Learning to drive has become expensive for many young people, and ‘private practice’ is now an increasingly popular choice for thousands of learners either instead of, or to supplement, formal tuition.

“Zixty makes that easier, more flexible and more affordable. Whether it’s an hour in a parent’s car, a weekend of extra driving before test day, or short-term cover after passing, our aim is to help young drivers gain real-world experience safely and responsibly. What makes this relationship particularly exciting is that DVSA recognised not only the value of flexible insurance for learners, but also our wider commitment to safer driving.”

Zixty’s extensive telematics data and proprietary telematics technology provides granular insight for better pricing and risk controls and ultimately improved loss ratios. Zixty is also developing a companion app using its own technology to give drivers personalised feedback and coaching, helping them understand how they drive and where they can improve.

By helping drivers understand behaviours such as acceleration, braking, cornering and speed management, Zixty aims to encourage safer, more confident driving from the earliest stages of independent motoring.

Zixty believes it is the only UK short-term car insurance provider developing its own proprietary telematics capability in this way.
