New Survey Reveals Over Half of UK Drivers Ignore Warning Lights

Some interesting findings on human nature here from MoneySuperMarket;

Despite being crucial to keeping a car safe and roadworthy, motorists are putting their safety at risk by ignoring dashboard warning lights, with many drivers admitting they’re unsure what the symbols mean or how serious the underlying problem could be, according to MoneySuperMarket.

In a survey of 2,000 UK drivers, MoneySuperMarket found which car checks and fixes Brits feel confident tackling themselves, where they need more support, and how much they don’t know about dashboard warning lights.

1 in 3 UK drivers ignore dashboard warning lights for days, survey finds

Key findings include:

• Overall, 31.7% of drivers have ignored a dashboard warning light for more than a few days, continuing to drive despite these appearing.

• The most commonly ignored warning lights were the check engine light (35.65%), service required (30%), and tyre pressure warning (28.9%)

• Out of all age groups surveyed, 18-24 year olds were the most likely to ignore a dashboard warning light, with 41.76% admitting to this.

• 29.5% avoid basic car maintenance because they’re worried about making a mistake or causing damage.

• Convenience (29.3%), lack of tools (25%) and not knowing how to carry out the task (21.9%) are also among the biggest barriers to DIY maintenance.
