Flood Re has unveiled plans to develop BeFloodReady into a national platform for flood resilience that will serve as a trusted online resource for flood resilience information, support, research and innovation in the UK. The ambition is to make flood resilience more accessible, practical and achievable for everyone in the face of increasing risk of flood.
Announced during Flood Action Week, and supported by Defra and Floods Minister Emma Hardy MP, the initiative sees Flood Re acquire BeFloodReady, a brand which originated as an Environment Agency Pathfinder project and has since been owned by Cornwall Council.
While flood resilience expertise, guidance and support already exist across many organisations, navigating that information can often be challenging for householders and communities. The platform will therefore bring together trusted advice, practical tools, expert support and resilience solutions in one place, helping people move from awareness to action.
The initiative’s vision is simple: a future where everyone has the knowledge, confidence and support they need to be flood ready. By helping people understand their flood risk, prepare their homes and businesses, and recover more quickly when flooding occurs, BeFloodReady aims to make resilience part of everyday life
As it develops, BeFloodReady will expand beyond public information and awareness. Long-term plans include supporting the development of Flood Performance Certificates, building skills and accreditation opportunities for resilience professionals and insurers, creating access to trusted Property Flood Resilience providers, and becoming a hub for research, innovation and evidence that connects policymakers, industry, researchers and communities.
Kelly Ostler-Coyle, Director of Corporate Affairs at Flood Re, said:
“Flooding can have a devastating impact on people’s lives, homes, businesses and communities. But while we cannot prevent every flood, there is much more we can do to help people prepare, reduce the damage and recover more quickly.
“BeFloodReady exists to make flood resilience easier to understand, easier to access and easier to act on. It’s about creating awareness and turning it into action. Our ambition is to create a trusted place where people can find practical guidance, expert support and clear information before, during and after flooding.
“By bringing together organisations from across the resilience community, we can help more people take simple steps that reduce damage, speed up recovery and build greater confidence for the future.”
The next major milestone for BeFloodReady will be its inaugural conference, Preparing Today. Protecting Tomorrow, taking place on 22 April 2027.
The event will mark the official hard launch of BeFloodReady as the UK’s national platform for flood resilience and bring together leaders from government, insurance, local authorities, academia, community organisations, industry, and the wider flood resilience industry. Through practical demonstrations, emerging research, innovation and discussions , the conference will become the UK’s flagship annual event for flood resilience.
Those interested in following the development of BeFloodReady or registering their interest in the April 2027 conference can sign up for updates through the existing BeFloodReady platform www.befloodready.co.uk
