New Research Reveals Danger Roads In December

Wessex Fleet sent out FOI requests to police forces across the UK to find out which areas and specific roads had the most accidents occur over the last 5years in December. With road conditions in December known for being tricky to navigate, as well as Christmas commuting, Wessex Fleet has also put together some safety tips on long distance driving.

This is useful data for anyone working in the Motor sector, from quote to claims. It’s important to remember though that not every solo vehicle accident is reported to the Police, which can skew the data a little. Also some Police forces record incidents such as Police pursuits and chases as road accidents, which again distorts the actual motor risk factor for insurers.

Full findings can be found here by the way; https://www.wessexfleet.co.uk/blog/2021/12/08/worst-roads-for-accidents-at-christmas/

  • The A470 in South Wales had the most accidents with 216. The top four spots were filled with accidents reported by South Wales Police. This is a particularly challenging road even in summer, but add winter conditions and many drivers find the moorland road too difficult.

Director of Wessex Fleet, Simon Naylor, added: “While many drivers need to travel over the festive period for work, family or other commitments, it’s important to be aware of the dangerous conditions that roads may be under during December and throughout the rest of winter.  Check your car is safe to travel, if you aren’t comfortable with this get a professional to check this for you. Make sure you take plenty of breaks when driving long distances and keep an eye on the road conditions in wintery weather, only travel if it’s safe to do so to help to avoid accidents.”
