In 2010, Cracknell was involved in a serious road cycling accident which left him with severe brain injuries and in a coma for three weeks. Subsequently Cracknell knows first-hand how imperative it is to have the right experts and rehabilitation plan in place and is a big advocate of rehabilitation and case management experts. He also advocates the importance of knowing your own strengths and resilience during recovery and taking responsibility for your own rehabilitation where possible.

Cracknell is a renowned athlete, a six-time world rowing champion and double Olympic gold medallist. In 2005, he was appointed OBE for services to sport in the New Year Honours list. Over the last 10 years Cracknell has been an active campaigner for safer sports and the prevention of head injuries including promoting the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling.

James Cracknell, OBE, Rehabilitation Ambassador, HCML, said: “I am hugely proud to be working with HCML as their Rehabilitation Ambassador. Following my own experience, I understand the importance for patients in having access to both optimum care and being inspired and motivated to maximise their own rehabilitation.

“Families and victims alike must receive the right support to help them understand, cope and where possible minimise the impact of life changing injuries. The work that HCML has done so far with this is incredible and I look forward to helping it build on this success providing high-level care to those who need it.”

Nick Delaney, CEO, HCML, said: “We are incredibly excited to have James involved in the business. Having access to first-class rehabilitation after an injury or accident plays in an essential role in helping a patient’s recovery and having the right expertise to help guide the way is imperative and something that our team at HCML is hugely passionate about.

“With James’ support, we will continue to raise the profile of case management, opening up access to those who need it and enabling us to work with and support a much wider range of people.”
