ESG is becoming an integral part of insurance brand compliance, risk pricing, everyday admin and even investment policy. So it makes sense to educate the would-be brokers, compliance officers, data analysts etc of the future. Broker trade body LIIBA is set to see the return of its STEM Insurance Insight Week, with the theme for this year’s event being ESG. Collaborating with Marsh, the world’s leading insurance broker and risk advisor, LIIBA will offer over 40 students the opportunity to gain insight into the insurance industry.
Open to pupils aged 14—18, the virtual experience aims to capture the imagination of potential future STEM leaders. Conducted throughout the October half-term week, attendees will be welcomed to delve into the opportunities offered across the insurance industry and how they incorporate different aspects of science, technology, engineering, and maths. The pupils have been invited by STEM Learning, a national body dedicated to increasing pupil’s awareness of opportunities in STEM in partnership with Government, learned bodies, charitable trusts, and employers.
Throughout the week, participants will be coached by a variety of professionals from across the sector, including consultants, actuaries, and technology experts. Pupils will learn about the role the insurance industry plays in driving societal change, with talks on how advisory and insurance solutions can support clients on their sustainability journey whilst protecting them from changing climate and sustainability risks.
In conjunction with the talks, pupils will put their knowledge to the test through a team project before presenting their projects to a panel (representing a fictitious client) at the end of the week. As well as gaining first-hand practical experience, participants will discover the importance of insurance in managing real-world risks, encouraging them to consider alternative career options beyond their previous considerations.
Jacqueline Girow, Associate Director of LIIBA, said: “LIIBA is really proud to be offering our STEM Insurance Insight Week for the second time. We look forward to welcoming a whole host of students from across the UK, helping to continue to drive forward our diversity and inclusion efforts. Amidst a rapidly changing risk environment, it’s important we open up the insurance industry to young people and highlight the opportunities for them to apply their STEM knowledge.”
Nicola Hughes, Senior Assistant General Counsel at Marsh, said: “Marsh is thrilled to support this event aimed at inspiring the next generation, regardless of background, to join our vibrant insurance industry. With young people increasingly focused on making a positive impact on the world around them, we also hope the event can showcase the role insurance can play in advancing the ESG agenda.”
LIIBA has recruited volunteers from across the industry and partner firms, who are accredited STEM Ambassadors. Across the week the volunteers will coach and encourage students to make the most of the experience.
Students attending the event will receive a certificate of achievement and a personal letter from LIIBA Chief Executive Christopher Croft. Pupils will also receive follow-up support to help forge their future endeavours.
LIIBA STEM Insurance Insight Week commences Monday 24 October.
