Job Moves and Senior Hires News 15.05.2023

It’s a full 5 day week this week, so we are back on track with our regular Monday job moves round up. Here goes;

APOLLO

Apollo, the independent specialist insurer and reinsurer, announces the appointment of Angus Winther as Chair of the Apollo Syndicate Management Limited (“ASML”) Board, subject to regulatory approval.  

Angus has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services and the insurance sector. He was a founding partner of Lexicon Partners, the London based investment banking advisory business that was acquired by Evercore in 2011, and served as a senior adviser at Evercore until 2016. He was previously a partner at Phoenix Securities after beginning his career at Chase Manhattan Bank. He is currently a non-executive director of Ecclesiastical Insurance Office plc and its parent Benefact Group plc, and was previously a non-executive director of Hiscox Syndicates Limited.

Angus’ appointment follows the retirement of Julian Cusack from his duties as ASML Chair after 8 years. Julian remains part of Apollo as Chair of Apollo Group Holdings Limited (“AGHL”).

SWISS RE CORPORATE

Adrian Hall is currently Head Canada at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. As of 1 September 2023, he will take on his new role as Head UK, Ireland, South Africa and EMEA Wholesale, succeeding Melanie Slack, who is leaving Swiss Re Corporate Solutions for retirement.

With nearly 30 years of international insurance industry experience, Adrian Hall started his career in London, UK. He has worked in various senior leadership roles in the Middle East, Latin America and Canada. Adrian Hall joined Swiss Re Corporate Solutions in 2017 as Head Canada, providing leadership across all facets of the Canadian business, including Chief Agent for our Canadian entity, product development, underwriting, operations, claims, customer & distribution management and marketing. Adrian Hall will relocate from Toronto to London, reporting to Nina Arquint, CEO EMEA at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions.

Melanie Slack joined Swiss Re in 2001 as the Life & Health Technical Chief Underwriter for Europe, Asia and Latin America. After holding a variety of senior management roles within Swiss Re Group, she was appointed Head UK, Ireland and South Africa at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions in 2021. Following a handover period, she is planning to leave the company for retirement.

CANOPIUS GROUP

Canopius Group, a global specialty (re)insurer, has announced the appointment of Philip Weston as Casualty Treaty Underwriter. Philip will report to Paul Western, Head of US Casualty Treaty, who joined Canopius in June 2022. Philip has 30 years of London market experience in both International and North American casualty treaty reinsurance business. He joins Canopius after more than 20 years at Faraday Syndicate, where he was most recently Head of International Casualty.

The arrival of Philip marks the latest in a suite of hires to Canopius’ expanding direct and reinsurance casualty proposition. His appointment follows that of David Mutton as Casualty Underwriter in the newly launched Melbourne office in March.

CHUBB

Chubb recently announced that Adam Mason has been appointed Executive Vice President, Casualty for Overseas General Insurance, the company’s general insurance operations. Currently, Mason serves as Deputy Head of Casualty for the business. In his new role, he will be responsible for the growth and profitability for Chubb’s casualty lines in 51 countries and territories outside North America.

Mason will continue to report to Mark Homan, who, as Chubb announced separately, has been named Division President, International Property and Casualty, for Overseas General Insurance. The appointments are effective June 1, 2023.

RAINBIRD TECHNOLOGIES

PEN UNDERWRITING
Pen Underwriting announces that Catriona Thomson has been appointed Chief Financial Officer and will join the Pen Executive team, with effect from 1 July 2023, subject to regulatory approval. This follows the announcement in March that current CFO Sarah Breslin will become Managing Director of Pen’s Specialty division at that time.

A chartered accountant by profession, Catriona brings a wealth of corporate knowledge, commercial acumen and extensive experience of working within regulated financial services. She also holds strong leadership credentials having been Head of IBA Operations in the UK for the wider Gallagher group since 2014, where she currently leads a team of more than 200 colleagues in Glasgow.

Prior to joining Gallagher, Catriona spent nine years at Morgan Stanley as a senior manager predominantly in the derivatives and global structured products arena, and was at PricewaterhouseCoopers within the public sector advisory unit before that.

IPIPELINE

iPipeline® announces that it recently added three experienced professionals to its leadership team. These appointments are part of the company’s ongoing commitment to creating a fulfilling, inclusive, and productive environment for its team of Pipers—as the firm continues to strategically transform the life insurance and financial services industries through its innovative technology solutions.

George McDonnell recently joined iPipeline as the company’s General Counsel. In this role, Mr. McDonnell oversees the full spectrum of iPipeline’s legal operations, including customer and vendor contracting, intellectual property, employment law, privacy and data security, corporate compliance and regulatory matters, and providing advice on strategic corporate planning and decisions. He reports directly to Deane Price, Chief Executive Officer of iPipeline.

With an extensive background in all aspects of human resources, Diane Rowell also recently joined iPipeline as the company’s Chief People Officer. In this role, she leads iPipeline’s global talent and people strategy for attracting, developing, engaging, and retaining its team of diverse professionals. All teams involved in global HR functions now report to Ms. Rowell, including recruitment, employee relations, talent management, and training and development. Ms. Rowell also reports directly to Ms. Price.

Ms. Rowell joined the company from Allscripts, a global electronic health records software company, where she served as Vice President of Human Resources, Business Partners, and Business Opportunities. Earlier in her career, she was Vice President of Human Resources at Misys Healthcare Systems, where she led all aspects of Human Resources for a business unit and led the Corporate and Executive Recruiting function. Ms. Rowell is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to Mr. McDonnell and Ms. Rowell, Aaron Guidotti recently joined iPipeline as Vice President of Research & Development. As a seasoned veteran in the wealth technology sector, Mr. Guidotti works with various teams within R&D to ensure projects and releases meet the needs of customers and are smoothly deployed. He will also continue to implement and refine iPipeline’s R&D, sales, and product management initiatives and processes that support all product lines and ensure the appropriate system resources.

ARGENTA

Argenta Syndicate Management Limited (“ASML”), a subsidiary of Argenta Holdings Limited, today announces the appointment of Rosemary Beaver and Nigel Meyer as non-executive directors, subject to regulatory approvals.

Rosemary Beaver is a seasoned leader with a strong track record in the global (re)insurance industry. She has held various governance, regulatory and business development roles and currently serves as a non-executive director and chair of the risk committee at Newline Group.  Her previous roles include senior adviser for the Financial Reporting Council, head of international regulatory affairs at Lloyd’s, and Master of the Worshipful Company of Insurers.

Nigel Meyer brings more than 25 years of insurance experience to the role, having held a number of senior positions, including group chief financial officer at Canopius and group chief operating officer at Brit Insurance. He currently serves as a non-executive director and chair of the Audit Committee at First Central Insurance Management and AmTrust Europe. A chartered accountant by profession, his experience combines an understanding of auditing and risk with expertise in P&C, specialty insurance, and managing the operations and finances of large organisations.

AMBAC

Ambac Financial Group (NYSE: AMBC) has announced the appointment of Naveen Anand as President of Cirrata Group, Ambac’s insurance distribution division. Anand, the former Group President of Players Health, will be responsible for expanding Cirrata Group and building its profile in the specialty property and casualty insurance market. This is a newly created position reporting to Claude LeBlanc, President and CEO of Ambac.

“Naveen is a seasoned P&C executive with extensive specialty lines expertise and strong industry relationships, making him an ideal choice for President of Cirrata,” LeBlanc said. “We are excited to welcome him to the team.”

Anand, who is based in New York, has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance industry. For the past two years, he was Group President at Players Health. He also served as a member of the company’s Board of Directors. Prior to that, he spent six years as President and
CEO of Hallmark Financial Services and four years as Torus Insurance’s CEO of Americas and Global Chief Operating Officer.

CLYDE AND CO

Global law firm, Clyde & Co has announced the appointment of medical negligence specialist Rachael Morris as a partner in its Birmingham office. Rachael brings health, advisory and litigation expertise to the firm’s growing medical malpractice capability.

With more than 20 years’ experience, Rachael leads on complex child neurological injuries and maternity claims for NHS Resolution. Rachael joins from Browne Jacobson’s healthcare team which she joined in 2005. She has worked with Medical Defence Union, Medical Protection Society, NHS Resolution and various NHS Trusts.

Claire Petts, Head of Healthcare at Clyde & Co, says: “Our healthcare team has been hugely successful recently, particularly in our reappointment to various NHS and insurer panels. Rachael is a key appointment to the team in response to that demand. She will look to build a team in Birmingham to serve our existing clients, as well as expand our capabilities across the West Midlands and nationally.”

HF (HORWICH FARRELLY)

HF, legal advisers to the insurance and commercial sectors, has onboarded 21 new people to its rapidly growing Recoveries department based in their flagship head office in Media City, Manchester. The announcement takes HF’s total number of people in that specialist area to over 100 people – making it one of the largest teams in the field.

The HF Recoveries team works for several large insurers and have seen consistent and increasing success for their clients, recovering over £14.4 million during the first quarter of 2023 alone, and taking over 57,000 instructions during the last year.

AEGIS LONDON

After 23 years in the role, AEGIS London’s head of claims Richard Foulger is to retire in June. His successor has been named as Kerry Williams, currently deputy head of claims at AEGIS London.

Richard Foulger led AEGIS London’s claims team through some of the syndicate’s most challenging periods in the early 2000s when the 9/11 tragedy and Gulf of Mexico wind storms had a huge impact on the London insurance market. Under Richard’s stewardship, AEGIS London’s claims team went on to be recognised as one of the leaders in the market, being awarded Gracechurch quality marques for outstanding claims service for the last eight years in succession.

Richard also drove the creation of AEGIS London’s Claims Commitment, which solidified the business’s high standards, in 2014.

MCGUIRE WOODS

McGuireWoods is bolstering its national environmental litigation and regulatory enforcement capabilities with the arrival of Atlanta partner Adam Sowatzka, a former EPA enforcement attorney who brings more than 25 years of experience handling crisis management, major environmental incident response, and civil and criminal investigations and enforcement matters spanning all areas of environmental media, including air, water and waste.Sowatzka assists clients in responding to catastrophic accidents, fires, explosions and spills and defends clients in government inquiries and investigations by federal, state and local agencies. Over the past several years, he helped clients recover more than $2 billion in insurance proceeds to rebuild after environmental, health or safety crises. He also has led internal investigations and litigated numerous cases in federal and state courts in high-stakes environmental enforcement actions.Sowatzka advises on matters involving emerging contaminants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). He was the lead attorney in one of the first major regulatory matters involving PFAS contamination of a municipal wastewater treatment plant, including the investigation of a three-county area in Northern Alabama impacted by biosolids from the plant.
