A North Yorkshire-based business has been named one of the best places to work in the UK by The Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2025 list. Here’s the word from ALA Insurance;
ALA Insurance, headquartered in Malton, specialises in GAP insurance, extended warranty products, and niche policies including cycle insurance and breakdown cover. The firm, which employs 11 staff, was recognised in the Small Organisation category of the prestigious national listing.
Founded in 1991 by Simon and Debra England, ALA has earned a reputation for its honest, human approach to insurance. With a philosophy that puts customers before commission, the company describes itself as offering: “Insurance from the kind kind, not the pushy kind.”
The Sunday Times list celebrates organisations with the UK’s happiest and most engaged workforces — and comes on the heels of ALA’s win for Best Customer Service in Financial Services at the UK Customer Experience Awards 2024.

Simon England, founder and Managing Director, said:
“I’m absolutely thrilled that ALA has been recognised in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work list. It’s a real testament to our incredible team who go above and beyond for our customers every day. Insurance can often be overwhelming and full of jargon — but we’ve built our business around honesty, clarity, and doing what’s right. Our team doesn’t work on commission, so they never feel the pressure to sell, and our customers never feel pressure to buy.”
Employee wellbeing is central to the company’s culture. ALA offers a range of people-first benefits, including free access to therapy, a workplace wellbeing programme, hybrid working, birthday leave, and paid volunteering days. In response to the rising cost of living, the business also provides free staff transport from the train station to the office.
Alongside this, ALA’s employee-based survey revealed an impressive 95% wellbeing score and 93% job satisfaction score, which is 21% higher than the average response in the insurance industry.
ALA’s inclusion on the national list brings well-deserved attention to North Yorkshire’s thriving business community — and highlights the role of smaller companies in shaping better, more people-focused workplaces across the UK.
