The delivery sector is fast-growing in the UK, and an opportunity for insurers. Although there are obvious challenges over fake identity and the substitute driver rules applied by the big food delivery apps. Here’s the word;
Acorn Group, one the UK’s leading non-standard providers of car, van, and taxi insurance, has announced the launch of a new insurance brand specifically designed for the UK’s delivery drivers. This innovative brand – Street Cover – addresses a critical gap in the market, providing tailored cover for individuals using their personal car for “hire and reward” activities, whether delivering food for platforms like Uber Eats and Deliveroo, parcels for online retailers, or goods for businesses such as independent food takeaway and florists.
The brand is solely focused on the delivery space which means a targeted and clear customer purchase journey with lots of support and advice. Drivers can purchase either an annual or a 30-day policy, offering flexibility to suit drivers’ needs. It is also entirely agnostic to the delivery platform or employer, meaning a driver is covered whether working for one or multiple services.
Contract delivery drivers unknowingly at risk
At the launch of Street Cover, the Liverpool-based insurer took the opportunity to highlight that some individuals earning extra income through flexible, contingent delivery driving might unknowingly be underinsured. Standard private motor insurance, and even typical business use policies, do not provide adequate cover for the delivery of goods in exchange for payment.
This critical distinction means that in the event of an accident while undertaking deliveries, drivers could find their policy void, leaving them personally liable for vehicle damage, third-party costs, and potential personal injury claims. Acorn’s new policy directly addresses this oversight, ensuring drivers are properly protected.
“There has been explosive growth in both home deliveries and the use of contract drivers to make deliveries in the UK, creating vital earning opportunities for countless individuals. However, with this growth comes a significant responsibility to ensure these drivers and the public are adequately protected,” said Alasdair Taylor, Street Cover General Manager, Acorn Group.
“Our deep expertise in the non-standard and taxi insurance markets means we understand the unique challenges faced by professional drivers. Digital delivery platforms are demanding proof of appropriate insurance, and our new policy empowers drivers to meet these requirements with confidence and peace of mind. We aim to educate drivers on the crucial need for this specialist cover, as some simply don’t realise that standard personal car insurance only provides cover for social or domestic use.”
Policies can be easily purchased exclusively through the Street Cover website, offering a seamless customer journey and access to a comprehensive customer portal for managing policy details.
Miruna Constantinescu, Acorn Group Customer and Marketing Director, added:
“We are proud to lead the way in serving non-standard insurance customers, particularly those in the contingent workforce economy. With deep industry expertise, we are uniquely positioned to provide hire and reward drivers with the dedicated support and tailored service they deserve. By combining cutting-edge digital tools with responsive, human customer service, we ensure drivers can manage their policies seamlessly online while also having access to knowledgeable representatives when it matters most.”
