Tourists Now Treated Like Criminal Suspects By EU

London, England - March 10 2024: Passport Control and the United Kingdom, UK Border Control at Heathrow Airport, London, England, Great Britain, Europe

We live in strange times when an unknown person can literally throw their ID into the sea, yet be welcomed into the UK, given free food and accommodation, pocket money, smartphone and other assistance such as free healthcare, translation services etc. Yet all UK citizens travelling to the EU will now be treated like suspects, having to provide fingerprints and digital photos when entering, or leaving the EU area.

But relax everyone, it’s for you own security.

The idea that it may take `slightly longer’ would be amusing, if it wasn’t destined to be so tedious and frustrating. It will add hours of admin at Border points, airports and ferry terminals, many will miss  their ferries and flights as people struggle with the new system and the tech inevitably breaks down/gets hacked at weekends.

Here are some thoughts from the RAC;

As the EU’s new Entry-Exit System begins a phased rollout at European border points, RAC head of policy Simon Williams has the following advice for drivers: “The new EU Entry-Exit System (EES) is rolling out from 12th October, meaning drivers will need to provide fingerprints and have their photos taken when they enter or exit Schengen border crossing points. With a phased roll-out taking place until April 2026, we’re advising motorists to check the official requirements at the UK departure point they’re using before they set off, as these will differ from place to place.

“Drivers should be prepared for checks to take slightly longer and for entry points to be busier during the roll-out phase, especially during peak seasons like half term or Christmas. The digital EES record is valid for three years, so if your pass is still valid only a fingerprint or photo will be required at border checks.”
