Live Streaming Subtly Becoming the Focus of Entertainment Giants in the 2020s

Once reserved for watching massive events or sporting contests online in real time, the live-streaming scene has expanded greatly. Entertainment providers have recognised the massive appeal of live content, the engagement levels that come with real-time events, and the potential money to be made in this war for our attention. After all, you have to be watching in that moment for the duration of the event to avoid missing out on anything that’s shown live.

It’s an incredibly strong draw that often manages to win over our attention. So, we’ve seen a whole host of entertainment giants invest heavily in their live streaming infrastructure and in bringing traditional live content to their audiences. It’s seen as part of the evolution of the entertainment industry, which is becoming increasingly internet-based. Now, we can see the chance to go or watch live as a big selling point across many corners of the entertainment industry.

The Live Experience Conveniently Found Online

The appeal of a real-time experience has been embraced by several entertainment providers now, from those who try to create a more authentic experience to those who want to command an audience at set times. Leaning into the angle of offering an authenticity online, dedicated studios have been established to offer an experience that’s as close to the in-house experience as possible. This is the idea at Sky Vegas, a platform looking to emulate the authentic casino experience by giving its players live games to play in real time.

Live-streamed casino games such as Crystal Roulette or Money Time are played in real time. The host will run the game, wait for the players to pick their options, such as to hit or stand in blackjack, and then follow the process of the game. If any of the players win, they’ll see their balances topped up in real time. It’s all about authenticity and immersion despite being online, which is greatly helped by the quality of the studios and apparatus, as well as having professional croupiers and hosts to run the games.

Many other platforms have sought to create must-see occasions by incorporating live streaming. Netflix is at the forefront of this in the streaming space. Becoming more and more like traditional TV, it now offers live sports, from one-off events like boxing exhibitions to weekly programs. The platform acquiring the rights to show weekly WWE performances was a huge step, as was collecting up the broadcasting of the NFL around the Christmas window.

You can also look to the works of Apple to incorporate live streaming in what was previously an exclusively audio product. Apple’s Podcasts app now supports live streams, following the trend of people wanting the option to see the podcasters react while running through their chat topics. So, podcasters who wish to have a studio setup and stream the presenters live can do so to their listeners – or rather, viewers – on Apple devices. So, even once-audio-bound forms of entertainment are embracing live video.

The Push for More Live Streaming Continues

With live streaming seen as a sector on the rise, more and more companies are looking to enhance the systems further. In 2025, IMAX Corporation announced that it would improve the visual quality of its live events with its own IMAX VisionScience AI-powered enhancement tool. In application, it’ll upgrade streams in real time, even 4K ones.

Despite live streaming options from major providers primarily being a viewing experience – creating the need to improve the visuals and presentations continually – there is a desire to go further. Live streaming, as showcased by the online casino games, has the potential to be a two-way experience. It can be interactive, which is what dedicated live streaming sites are trying to lean into.

After all, viewing is a passive experience. Making it interactive would only increase engagement levels with live streams. The likes of Twitch and YouTube are encouraging streamers to see their live streams as interactive experiences enjoyed in real time, rather than performances. So, real-time chat features, polls, collaborative features, and ways to direct the action on-screen have all become more prominent and, in theory, will get even better.

A similar approach could be nudged towards popular podcasters who also use live streams. For its many failings, Google’s Stadia platform did attempt to create a new, even more immersive way for viewers to join streamers in their activities in real time. Of course, the Stadia is gone now, but some of the ideas for the product could still be embraced to further the engagement of live streams.

Live streaming has built its way to prominence on the promise of a real-time, anything-can-happen experience found conveniently via an internet connection. Going forward, more platforms will create ways to take it from a mostly viewing experience to an even more immersive one.
