The latest news from ASR for you;
Africa Specialty Risks (“ASR”), the developing markets-focused (re)insurance group, today announces that Fitch Ratings has upgraded ASR Re Limited’s Financial Strength Rating (“FSR”) to ‘A-’ from ‘BBB+’. The outlook is Stable.
Mikir Shah, Chief Executive Officer, commented:
“We are delighted that Fitch has upgraded ASR Re to an A- rating. This credit rating upgrade reflects the profitable growth of our business as we increase our scale, develop our portfolio and broaden our geographic reach, all underpinned by disciplined underwriting and the responsible stewardship of capital.
“ASR is now the second largest reinsurer in Africa with a forecast GWP of $500mn plus in 2026, which demonstrates our ability to continue delivering on our business strategy as we enable development by fulfilling unmet insurance needs in growth markets.”
Caroline Hilton, Chief Strategy Officer, commented:
“Fitch’s assessment of our capitalisation, financial performance and future growth plans validate the strength of the platform we have built. As we embark on our Vision 2030, we have a firm foundation from which to deepen our presence in Africa and the Middle East, while continuing our expansion into Asia and Latin America.”
Fitch highlighted several key strengths supporting the upgrade, including:
Strengthened company profile: ASR’s business has continued to expand across Africa and other developing markets while maintaining profitability and capital strength.
Expanding business franchise: Fitch views positively ASR Group’s growing relevance in both core and new markets including Central and Southeast Asia, and LatAM, supported by ASR’s strong capacity providers and further expansion at Lloyd’s.
Supportive new ownership: Since announcing ASR’s acquisition by Vitruvian Partners in June 2026, Fitch views the new ownership as supportive of ASR’s profitable growth trajectory through strategic continuity and additional capital support.
Extremely strong capitalisation: ASR maintained an ‘Extremely Strong’ Fitch Prism Global score at the end of 2025. ASR’s enhanced capital ratio was 291%.
Market leading financial performance: ASR has been profitable since 2022 with underwriting performance strengthened further in 2025 with a Fitch-calculated combined ratio of 81.5%.
Comprehensive retrocession protection: Fitch considers ASR’s retrocession arrangements across business lines to be comprehensive and effective in limiting loss exposure.
