Quick Comments on That IKEA/Urban Jungle Partnership

Here are some comments from Sara Perez at EIS on the recent IKEA and Urban Jungle partnership;

“IKEA isn’t becoming an insurer. Insurance is becoming part of the retail experience.

IKEA has built one of the world’s most successful retail brands by removing friction from the customer experience. From flat-pack furniture to self-service stores, its success has always been about making things simpler. Its UK home-insurance partnership with Urban Jungle is another extension of that philosophy.

What matters isn’t simply that IKEA is offering insurance. It’s that another trusted consumer brand has recognised that protection can form a natural part of the customer relationship, not sit apart as an entirely separate purchase.

That is the opportunity behind embedded and affinity insurance: making protection relevant, contextual and accessible through the brands and experiences customers already use and trust.

Amazon demonstrated that embedded insurance isn’t just another product category that can be dropped into a checkout journey. It has to be relevant to the purchase, contextual and offered at the right moment. IKEA appears to understand that distinction.

For insurers, the opportunity isn’t to become retailers. It’s to build the digital distribution capabilities that allow them to partner with trusted brands and deliver protection wherever customers choose to buy. That requires more than a digital front-end.

Insurers need flexible, API-enabled platforms capable of supporting new partners, propositions, customer journeys and servicing models, without every new distribution opportunity becoming another lengthy technology programme.

The winners won’t necessarily be the brands customers associate with selling insurance. They’ll be the insurers behind those brands that can make protection feel like a natural part of the customer journey, while at the same time making every new partnership economically and operationally scalable.

As more consumer brands look to embed financial services into their customer experience, that ability will become a significant competitive advantage.”
