Tesco Insurance Research Shows Pothole Compo Claims Are Rising

The deliberate neglect of UK roads by the public sector is something which ultimately costs lives, of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. But it can also cause financial stress if your vehicle is damaged with some suspension parts or sub-frames costing over 3K to replace. Here’s some research from Tesco Insurance for you;

Tesco Insurance data show pothole damage claims between January and May this year were already 25% higher than those recorded during the first six months of 2025, despite covering one month less.

That follows a difficult start to the year for UK motorists, with the insurer settling 12% more claims in January 2026 than it did in the entire second half of 2025.

As well as an increased number of claims, the value of payouts is surging, suggesting that potholes across the country are continuing to deteriorate.

The average value of each successful claim has also risen by 41%, from £3,814 in the first half of 2025 to £5,380 between January and May this year.

The figures suggest there has been little let-up in the UK’s pothole problem this year, with claim volumes remaining broadly consistent across the first and second quarters of 2026.

Wheels have accounted for by far the highest number of pothole damage claims in 2026, followed by suspension, engine, the underside of vehicles, bumpers and body panels.

Regionally, Peterborough tops Tesco Insurance’s pothole claims table, having recorded more pothole damage claims than any other town or city every year since 2020.

Tonbridge and Northampton complete the top three, while Dorchester, Lincoln and Croydon recorded the fewest claims.

Alex Cross, Chief Customer Officer at Tesco Insurance, said: “Potholes have plagued the nation’s motorists for several years, with our latest data showing that the issue is continuing to worsen.

“Not only has the number of claims increased significantly this year, but the average cost of each claim has also risen considerably.

“With the trend likely to continue as roads deteriorate, we advise drivers to take extra care when driving to avoid any costly damage to their vehicles.”

To help motorists reduce the risk of pothole damage, Tesco Insurance experts have shared five quick tips:

  1. Slow down on poorly maintained roads. Hitting a pothole at speed increases the likelihood of tyre or suspension damage.
  2. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, giving you more time to spot potholes and other hazards.
  3. Be especially cautious after heavy rain or flooding, as this is when potholes can fill with water and become harder to see.
  4. Avoid sudden braking or swerving at the last minute, which can increase the risk of losing control or causing further damage.
  5. Check tyre pressure regularly. Underinflated tyres are more vulnerable to impact damage from potholes.
