Barcelona Event Looks at AI Impact Across Insurance

Some feedback from a recent conference held in Barcelona;

Weecover, the reference insurtech platform for insurance management and distribution, has brought together around fifty executives, investors and technology experts from the insurance sector in Barcelona. The event, which forms part of an annual initiative to connect with its community, has focused on discussing the practical applications and disruptive potential of Artificial Intelligence in an industry facing a decisive moment in its modernisation.

Held at the Barcelona Finance Hub last Thursday, 17 September, the event addressed the current maturity of AI models and their integration into critical operations such as underwriting, customer service and cost optimisation.

From integrated distribution to the algorithmic revolution

During the institutional opening, Jordi Pagés, CEO and co-founder of Weecover, reviewed the company’s evolution as a SaaS platform for comprehensive management and distribution for the insurance sector. Pagés stressed the need to overcome the technological rigidity that still weighs on a large part of the industry:

“From day one, our obsession was to make insurance easier. We identified that traditional distribution channels did not have flexible technological solutions for selling insurance. To adopt any innovation, and especially Artificial Intelligence, it is first essential to have a modular, API-first architecture that allows products to be configured in real time without technical dependencies.”

Pagés also highlighted the importance of providing distributors with genuine sales and management capabilities, from pricing through to collection, stressing that legacy architectures do not allow for a completely seamless user experience.

The debate: Automation, efficiency and the reconfiguration of employment

The core of the event was a roundtable moderated by Rafael Gallardo, CDO of Weecover, featuring prominent voices from the innovation and technology ecosystem applied to insurance:

● Adrián Escude, CRO and CMO in seQura’s commerce vertical.

● Jordi Rivera, Insurtech Investment Expert and Chairman of the Board of Directors at Caja Ingenieros Vida.

● José María Lucas, Co-founder of Tuio.

The debate produced clear conclusions about the impact of AI on operational efficiency and its effect on administrative workforces. There is a consensus that the widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence will very likely result in a net reduction in routine and highly mechanised tasks, which could translate into a downward adjustment in the overall number of workers dedicated to purely administrative functions.

Nevertheless, the panel agreed that this technological transition will also act as a powerful catalyst for the emergence of new highly specialised roles. Profiles capable of orchestrating predictive models, ensuring data governance, auditing algorithmic results and designing integration architectures will take on an unprecedented role in the insurers of the future, redefining the talent required in the sector.
