China’s Great Value Cars Are Actually Transforming the Global Car Market

Over the last 20 years successive UK governments have tried to encourage a switch from ICE cars to battery vehicles. With mixed results. But China has come to the rescue of green activists across Europe and the UK with a plethora of affordable electric cars which can be rented for as little as £200-£300pcm, far less than many new BMWs, Evoques, G Class Mercs, Audi Q5s etc.

For car makers, it’s bad news, as they’re seeing their market share shrink faster than a TV presenter’s waistline on Ozempic. But for Net Zero enthusiasts the long march of Jaecoo, Chery, OMODA and others promises a battery powered transport utopia. Possibly.

One interesting move recently by Stellantis who owns Fiat, Alfa and Peugeot-Citroen was the debut of the electric 2CV concept, which is a joint venture with Leapmotor of China. Assembled in Europe, but the key components manufactured in China. Maybe that’s the hybrid future for all car production?

Here’s the word from GlobalData who have seen a tipping point in the BEV vs ICE battle for market share;

The UK automotive market reached a crucial tipping point in September 2026, as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) narrowly closed the gap with traditional internal combustion engine (ICE)-only vehicles. This intense powertrain rivalry, anchored by dominant hatchback demand and surging electric adoption, signals a structural shift that will redefine manufacturer strategies and supply chains across Europe’s highly competitive transport landscape, reveals GlobalData, a leading intelligence and productivity platform.

Passenger vehicles accounted for approximately 88% of the total UK automotive market while commercial vehicles, treated as light commercial vehicles (LCVs), recorded accounted for around 12% in September 2026.

Hatchbacks dominated the market with approximately 49% of total vehicle sales. Estate vehicles ranked second with 25% share, followed by panel vans with 11% share. Other body types included multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), saloons, coupes, chassis cabs and pickup trucks.

Tushar Vitthal Wandare, Automotive Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “The UK automotive market showed a narrow gap between ICE-only vehicles and BEVs in September 2026, with ICE-only vehicles leading at approximately 28% of the total market and BEVs close behind at 26%. This highlights the growing importance of powertrain diversification in the UK market, with manufacturers needing to balance established ICE demand against rising electric vehicle adoption.”

The LCV market was led by panel vans accounted for approximately 85% of commercial vehicle sales followed by chassis cabs and pickups. Window vans, motor caravans, platform cabs, car-derived vans and chassis cowl vehicles made up the remainder of the LCV market.

Competition among individual models and manufacturers was also evident. Jaecoo 7 was the best-selling model, followed by the Tesla Model 3 and Ford Transit Custom. Volkswagen led the manufacturer rankings followed by Ford, BYD and Mercedes-Benz.

Tushar concludes: “The September 2026 data highlights the UK automotive market’s diverse demand patterns. The narrow gap between ICE-only vehicles and BEVs, alongside substantial PHEV and 48-volt mild hybrid volumes, underscores the importance of a multi-powertrain strategy. Meanwhile, Jaecoo 7’s model leadership and Volkswagen’s manufacturer ranking highlight the competitive pressures shaping market positioning.”
