Some useful advice here;
An insurance broker and risk management firm has stressed the importance of immediate specialist legal intervention following serious road traffic incidents, with early support often crucial to the way major claims are managed.
Leeds-based McCarron Coates, which specialises in insurance and risk management for transport and commercial vehicle operators, has provided its clients with access to LMP Legal’s 24/7 legal roadside assistance service for the past two years.
The service gives drivers and operators immediate access to specialist legal advice and representation following a serious incident, including support at the scene.
McCarron Coates says the service has proved particularly valuable when dealing with serious ‘blue light’ incidents, with around 30 calls made since the partnership began, 10 of which involved fatalities or potentially high-value claims where reserves could run into millions of pounds.
The decision to make the service accessible to its client base followed an incident in which one of the broker’s clients was involved in a serious collision resulting in multiple fatalities.
Although the client had not yet formally taken up the service, McCarron Coates contacted LMP Legal for assistance and the specialist legal team was able to provide support at the scene.
The experience led to McCarron Coates entering into a commercial arrangement with LMP Legal to fund the service for all of its clients.
For Ian McCarron, Director at McCarron Coates, the value of the service however goes beyond simply providing a driver with access to legal advice.
He believes having a specialist involved at the earliest possible stage can give operators and claims teams much greater visibility of what has happened, thus allowing them to respond to the claim significantly sooner.
He said: “When you are dealing with a serious incident, particularly one involving a fatality or a claim that could potentially run into millions of pounds, the way that claim is managed from the very beginning can make a significant difference.
