Over 55 per cent of motorists are considering buying an electric car according to research commissioned ahead of the launch of AX Electric – a new service from AX offering like-for-like replacement vehicles for EV owners following an accident.
The study by the accident aftercare specialist reveals the extent of consumer demand for EVs as it seeks to help insurers boost customer confidence and retention within the new EV community. AX is the first major accident aftercare specialist to give insurers access to the largest and most diverse EV fleet and non-fault accident service, AX Electric.
The research involving over 2,200 motorists also revealed that currently only one third of EV drivers would accept an equivalent petrol or diesel model whist their car is being repaired; with two thirds expecting to receive the same EV model for the period their own car is off the road. AX Electric is a compelling addition designed to help insurers and brokers retain customers with an improved service for the growing EV market. AX already has extensive experience in the insurance market after building strong, transparent and sustainable relationships with many motor insurers and brokers.
As well as AX’s survey, which shows interest is rising, the SMMT reported a significant surge in sales of EVs and plug-in hybrids – these accounted for 10.7% of all cars sold in the UK in 2020. The new offering is part of a wider investment in EV infrastructure which will support AX’s rapidly growing fleet of electric vehicles. The programme will see AX cease further expansion of its plug-in hybrid vehicle fleet, to focus and align their fleet in support of the huge swing in BEV sales.

The AX Electric service will be available to drivers through dealers, fleet customers and direct to market, as well as offering services tailored for their insurer and broker partners.
Steve Molloy, Director of Commercial Sales at AX, said: “We entered the insurance market several years ago, establishing excellent relationships, whilst helping partners to build outstanding service levels. We can now help insurers to keep pace as the UK rapidly embraces EVs, which typically attract customers with high expectations.
“For many drivers, once they have decided to make the switch to an electric vehicle, the thought of taking a step back into a conventionally powered vehicle is unacceptable – that is the crux of new AX Electric service. We want insurers to be able to offer an appropriate replacement vehicle and an outstanding customer journey, too.
“AX Electric marks a new step in our history of accelerating change in our sector. We are among the very first accident aftercare specialists to commit to reducing our carbon footprint with a dedicated EV offering.”
