Surprised commuters couldn’t believe their eyes with the sky-high prices at a new coffee shop in central London recently – but the ‘world’s most expensive coffee’ turned out to be a shock initiative highlighting the cost of spilling coffee on uninsured electronic gadgets. The ‘Café Au Pay’ featured a selection of espres-SO costly beverages including an Americano for £429, or the cost of replacing a coffee-damaged smartwatch, £1,179 for a Cappuccino which would also cover a top-of-the-range tablet, and £5,012 for a Latte which is the same as a replacement laptop or MacBook.
Insurance provider Urban Jungle, which was behind the stunt, analysed nearly 6,000 claims from customers and found that almost three-quarters (72%) of contents insurance claims are now for accidental damage – with coffee, tea and water damage considered some of the biggest culprits.
The data also reveals that over one in 10 (13%) of these claims are for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops – which can result in high costs if the item is damaged and uninsured.
Due to the pandemic, more people are now investing in electronic equipment to enable them to work remotely – and real-time data of all listed items on Urban Jungle customer policie reveals there was a 65% increase in policy coverage of electrical equipment from 2020 to 2021, with MacBooks and laptops among the most popular items.
With the average laptop costing £1,000 – £5,000, they require a significant investment but often aren’t considered when thinking about insurance.
