Does The Make & Model of Car Influence PI Claims Risk?

It’s always interesting to break down the car insurance PI claims data. By age of driver, experience since gaining Full Licence, traffic conditions, speed limits, drink driving vs sober and so on. But what about make and model of car, does that make a difference? IE is sceptical, as once you factor in the volume of say Ford Fiestas on the road, or Nissan Qashqais outside school gates, it really is little more than a survey of generalisations. Like BMW drivers are more aggressive, or Nissan Micra pensioners are very slow near pharmacies and tend to park poorly. It isn’t helpful.
But here’s a survey covering that make & model data from GoShorty who analysed crash statistics from the Department for Transport and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the USA.
In first place, the most likely to crash vehicle in the UK is the Toyota Prius with 1,207 collisions per 100,000 licensed vehicles in 2020. We found there were 1,236 Toyota Prius’ involved in a reported personal injury collision during the 2020 calendar year, and 102,440 licensed vehicles by the end of 2020, meaning there were 1,207 crashes per 100,000. The Prius is of course popular with private hire drivers, although that may have little to do with the PI claims.
The Honda Insight ranks in second place as one of the most crashed vehicles in the UK, with 1,011 collisions per 100,000 licensed vehicles. Of all the vehicle collisions in 2020, we found that 90 were attributable to Honda Insights.
The Land Rover/ Range Rover is one of the most likely vehicles to be involved in a crash in the UK, with 861 collisions per 100,000 licensed vehicles. According to the Department for Transport, there were 118,484 Range Rovers licensed by the end of 2020, and there were 1,020 crashes during the calendar year. But is that due to Range Rovers being involved in car crime and Police pursuits? The survey data doesn’t delve that deep sadly.
The research also spotted that over 40 PI claims were generated during 2020, from both the Porsche 911 and the Audi TT, which is what you would expect from high performance cars. But people carriers like the VW Sharan saw 243 PI claims, compared to just 34 from owners of the Mitsubishi Grandis. How odd, almost like some Sharan owners have unsecured passengers inside and tend to drive long distances while not eating or drinking. But let’s not jump to conclusions, more research is definitely needed on the VW Sharan parc.
