The latest from the MIB, after they hosted an international event in Windsor recently;
MIB was the proud host of the COB (Council of Bureaux) General Assembly this month, bringing together colleagues from 50 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East to help maintain frictionless travel across the regions. MIB were instrumental in setting up the COB (Council of Bureaux) 75 years ago and continues to play a key role negotiating and influencing on behalf of UK insurers.
The event, which was based at the De Vere Beaumont Estate in Windsor, was centred around the General Assembly where delegates vote on key issues. With delegates from 50 countries in one place, it was also an opportunity for MIB to demonstrate the unique history and culture that makes the UK a special place and show guests that the UK is as welcoming and vibrant as ever.
While most of MIB’s work is centred in the UK helping victims of uninsured and hit-and-run driving and working with Police to makes roads safer, it also plays an important and influential role across Europe and beyond. At the heart of this work is the Green Card system, which enables cross border travel without having to purchase separate insurance policies at each border.
MIB, who look after the system on behalf of UK, help provide UK motorists with hassle-free travel, keeping people moving across 7.5 million square kilometres across Europe and beyond. The system also protects victims of accidents as it also provides a platform for settling claims arising from collisions caused by foreign vehicles in the UK and UK-based vehicles in the other 49 countries of the Green Card system.
Nick Robbins, Chief Technical Officer at MIB, said:
“As a founding member of the COB, we were delighted to be given the honour of hosting the General Assembly in the COB’s 75th anniversary year. It is an important annual event bringing together representatives from 50 countries to discuss and vote on key issues regarding cross-border travel. It is the only time each year that all the countries come together to pass important decisions about cross-border compensation.
“We also had the opportunity to showcase what the UK has to offer, enabling guests to experience Hampton Court Palace, classic British music and Windsor Castle. Everyone we’ve spoken to since has said what a great time they had, which will undoubtedly strengthen relationships for many years to come.”
A recent YouGov survey conducted by MIB showed that this work is more important than ever. The survey showed that almost half (46%) of the British public have, or would like to, drive their car abroad, yet over 70% don’t know how the essential Green Card system works. Through raising awareness and providing a series of consumer top tips this summer, MIB is looking to help increase understanding in this area to ensure UK motorists can travel safely abroad with peace of mind they have the right protection.
Since the UK’s departure from the EU, MIB has been working to minimise disruption for drivers and insurers and successfully secured agreements with all 30 EEA countries to ensure a route to compensation for UK residents for are victims of road traffic collision in the EEA, caused by uninsured and hit-and-run vehicles.
