As the UK government rushes to ship coal thousands of miles to keep blast furnaces open in Scunthorpe, it’s interesting to note that the ideology of climate change remains embedded within the public sector, despite the realities supplying materiel to a war machine in Ukraine. The shift from petrol to electric cars is an aim of the government too of course, in order to attain a carbon neutral economy. Whether this simply leaves the UK as a consumer market for new cars, rather than a volume manufacturer remains to be seen.
When it comes to EV policyholders the future will undoubtedly see a rising gap between EV premiums and ICE vehicles, as the expense of repair, recycling fire-prone battery packs and replacing the written-off vehicles continues to escalate. At what price point will drivers cry enough and insist that insurers stop spending money on virtue-signalling and deliver real savings via platform tech, data sharing and AI admin?
Here’s the latest from the Green Insurer;
The Green Insurer, which is focused on helping drivers reduce carbon emissions and drive in a more environmentally friendly way, has taken a major step forward in its commitment to environmental responsibility with a new partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain.
It will now be able to offset all its customers’ carbon emissions across seven internationally certified projects chosen to deliver environmental and social impact. Following its Carbon Neutral certification last year, where The Green Insurer demonstrated that it had neutralised its own operational emissions, the broker is further enhancing this commitment to its car insurance policy holders.
By funding seven internationally certified carbon offset projects, The Green Insurer is helping to empower drivers to reduce their carbon footprint while driving and contribute to initiatives that have a meaningful environmental and social impact worldwide.
The projects include:
· Salkhit Wind Farm (Mongolia) – the country’s first grid-connected wind farm, generating renewable electricity and advancing Mongolia’s technical expertise in sustainable energy.
· Elazig Solar Farm (Turkey) – a pioneering high-efficiency solar farm that reduces the country’s reliance on fossil fuels while ensuring economic stability and energy security.
· Karnataka Wind Power (India) – a large-scale wind energy project supplying clean power to India’s Southern Regional Electricity Grid, replacing fossil fuel generated electricity.
· Household Solar Lighting (Zambia) – providing cost-effective, clean solar lighting to families without electricity, replacing kerosene lamps and fireplaces, and improving safety and social conditions within the home.
· Reforestation (Costa Rica) – over one million trees planted to restore 2,115 hectares of former pastureland, enhancing biodiversity and wildlife habitats.
· Reforestation (Uruguay) – restoring 21,298 hectares of degraded land previously used for cattle grazing, promoting sustainable forestry and revitalising ecosystems
· Blue Carbon Mangrove Restoration (Pakistan) – the world’s first verified blue carbon project covering 350,000 hectares of mangroves in Pakistan’s Indus River Delta. The project is expected to remove 142 million tonnes of CO2e from the atmosphere, marking a significant contribution to global climate mitigation efforts.

Paul Baxter, CEO, The Green Insurer, said: “Since launching, our mission has been to help drivers reduce their carbon footprint. Alongside achieving Carbon Neutral status for our own business, we understand how important it would be to support our customers in doing the same. Our partnership with Carbon Neutral Britain allows us to offset emissions from their driving in a way that not only reduces carbon impact but also delivers tangible and long-term environmental and social benefits around the world.”
Caspar Eccles-Williams, Senior Environmental Consultant, Carbon Neutral Britain, commented: “We are delighted to support The Green Insurer in assisting their customers with the reversal of the currently ‘unavoidable’ tail-pipe emissions associated with their travel. With transport representing one of the largest Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions sources in the United Kingdom, carbon offsetting provides a vital short-term initiative, as consumers transition to more eco-friendly methods of transport.”
The Green Insurer has launched car insurance policies that customers can buy direct from its website at http://www.thegreeninsurer.com and through leading price comparison websites. A customer’s Green Driving Score will be used to calculate their renewal premium and to offer discounts when they renew. Policies are linked to a mobile app, which monitors how customers drive.
All customer enquiries to The Green Insurer will be dealt with by humans based in the UK rather than chatbots or overseas call centres.
