Mother and Son Fraudsters Stopped in Their Tracks

The latest case report from hf who have been working with Admiral;

Admiral Insurance and HF, leading legal advisors to the insurance and commercial sectors, have sent out a strong message to would-be fraudsters by obtaining a judgment against mother and son scammers Inderjit Singh and Simerjit Singh. The Singhs pursued a fraudulent claim with a value over £2million but now face paying costs and damages of over £200,000.

Inderjit was involved in a minor accident with Admiral’s insured. It was accepted that she had sustained some injury, but the extent of her claim was completely at odds with what would have been expected in the circumstances.

She pursued a claim for a significant head injury, cognitive issues and claimed she required round-the-clock care, being incapable of looking after herself, walking without aids, driving or tending to her own basic needs. In total, Mrs Singh’s claim was in excess of £2million.

The claim was brought with considerable help from Mrs Singh’s son, a Chartered Accountant who lived with her during the period when care was claimed. He gave evidence to medical experts, provided a witness statement corroborating his mother’s claim and even helped with the production of a detailed schedule of the care and assistance his mother was allegedly given.

Investigations by Admiral and HF showed that Mrs Singh was, in fact, not in receipt of any round the clock care, was fully able to fend for herself, walk unaided and even drive – in the three years following the accident she averaged 10,000 miles per year.

Supported by significant surveillance evidence and their medical experts, Admiral contested Mrs Singh’s claim, accusing her of dishonesty. They launched a counter-claim against both Mrs Singh and her son for having conspired to bring a fraudulent claim.

DAMAGES AND COSTS

Handing down his judgment on 23 July 2025 after a six-day trial in May, HHJ Hellman found that Mrs Singh had brought a dishonest claim and that she and her son had conspired against Admiral. After dismissing her claim, he awarded damages to Admiral totalling just under £55,000, including £10,000 exemplary damages against each of the Singhs. The punitive damages were awarded to reflect the nature and extent of the Singhs’ dishonesty. The Singhs will both be jointly responsible for Admiral’s costs and were ordered to make an initial payment towards those costs of £150,000.

HHJ Hellman found that Simerjit Singh was aware of the true nature of his mother’s capabilities and actively conspired with her to overstate them. If he had acted honestly, his mother’s dishonest claim would not have got off the ground. Mrs Singh was deemed to not be a credible or reliable witness and the Judge described the counter-claim as a model example of a case which merits exemplary damages given that the genuine claim was worth c.£9,500 and was inflated dishonestly to more than £2million.

Alex Wilkinson, Partner and head of HF’s Large Loss Fraud team, said “Claimants who dishonestly exaggerate their otherwise genuine claims should already be wary given the power the court has to dismiss claims. This case helps demonstrate that they, and anyone who helps them commit fraud, should also consider what other sanctions they could face.  The Singhs, in attempting to defraud Admiral, sought to enrich themselves by over £2million but now have to pay thousands to Admiral in damages and costs.”

Stuart Cook, Head of Technical Claims at Admiral, said “Admiral is committed to treating all customers and claimants fairly, while taking proportionate action when fraud is uncovered. In this case, Mrs Singh’s dishonest claim – potentially valued in the millions – was only made possible with the active involvement of her son.

We hope this outcome sends a clear message – honesty is not optional, and fraudulent behaviour will be met with decisive action.  Admiral will continue to protect the integrity of the claims process and hold anyone accountable who seeks to undermine it.”
