Aviva is expanding its AI underwriting summarisation tool to support individual Income Protection applications, completing the rollout of AI technology across its individual protection product range.
The rollout means most individual protection applications where a medical report is required can now be summarised, spanning life insurance, critical illness and income protection cover.
The tool, the first of its kind in the protection market when it launched for individual life insurance applications in November 2025, has already delivered significant improvements in underwriting efficiency and turnaround times. The launch was followed by adapting the technology for critical illness applications in March 2026.
Aviva’s AI underwriting capability focuses on the front end of the journey, supporting underwriters to make decisions more quickly from the point of application, when speed and clarity matter most.
The tool uses generative AI to analyse medical reports, transforming lengthy and complex documents into concise summaries containing the key information underwriters need to review.
This has reduced the time underwriters spend reviewing each case by around half.
Extensive testing has demonstrated high levels of accuracy (99.7%), enabling underwriters to assess applications more efficiently while maintaining robust decision-making.
