Bike Theft? It’s an Urban Jungle Out There Mate

As more people take to two wheels, new data reveals that bike theft claims have increased significantly versus last year.

On average, a bike is stolen every six minutes in the UK and new claims data from home insurance provider Urban Jungle reveals that claims for cycle thefts between January and April have increased by a staggering 126% this year versus the same time last year.

As raging fuel prices and the cost-of-living crisis bites, more people are switching to cycling for both commuting and personal mobility needs, combined with the fact an estimated 1.3m Brits purchased a bike during the pandemic.

To coincide with National Insurance Day (28th June), Urban Jungle is reminding the nation of the importance of having the correct level of insurance cover in place to protect against loss or damage.

Stephen Cowap, Insurance Director of Urban Jungle, said:Whether you’re a bike fanatic or humble commuter, theft claims are very common among cities and high-density areas. Bikes are the most common thing to have stolen3 as they are difficult to trace and easy to steal. From the data, it looks like bike thefts aren’t slowing down any time soon and so it’s always worth taking extra precautions to protect your bike from theft.

Most insurance providers will cover for theft within the home, but it can also be a good idea to check that it includes Out Of Home cover for theft when you’re out and about, so you know your bike is covered even when it’s locked up outside the corner shop! At Urban Jungle, our policies start from just £5 – it pays to be vigilant and step up your bike security in order to deter thieves.”
