No doubt about it, we are getting near the flood season in the UK, where sudden storm events can overwhelm poorly maintained drainage infrastructure, causing water damage for homeowners and business owners alike. Here’s the word on Flood Re’s work in Parliament;
Over 50 MPs attended an educational drop-in event in Parliament last week held by Flood Re, the newly elected politicians eager to find out more about the flood insurance scheme, the Build Back Better initiative and the benefits of property flood resilience.
The majority of MPs and researchers attending the session were newly elected or appointed following the General Election in July. The session offered MPs the chance to speak one-on-one with Flood Re Interim CEO Stuart Logue, Julie Foley, Director of Flood Risk Strategy & National Adaptation at the Environment Agency and Chris Rumsey, Head of Public Affairs at the Association of British Insurers.
The Drop In event also coincided with the Environment Agency’s Flood Action Week.
Kelly Ostler-Coyle, Head of Communications and Stakeholder Engagement at Flood Re commented:
“This was our first ever drop-in event for MPs, and attendance on the day far surpassed our expectations, reflecting a high level of interest in flooding from regions across the UK. Ensuring MPs are fully conversant with the existence and management of the Flood Re scheme, including the Build Back Better initiative and the role of property level flood resilience, is increasingly important as the clock ticks towards our exiting of the market in 2039 and the return to risk-reflective pricing.
“MPs have an important role to play promoting local flood defence investment, promoting flood resilience measures and water management schemes in their constituencies as well as ensuring their constituents know where they can access information about their flood risk, how they can prepare for flooding and how they can protect their homes if flooding strikes.”
