The CEO of specialist insurer Beazley is encouraging City businesses to seize the opportunity that employing ex-offenders could bring to their business.
The call came at an extraordinary gathering of City business leaders at Beazley’s London headquarters on Thursday, 3 September, where two high-flying businessmen who served time in US federal prison – former Autonomy CFO Sushovan Hussain and entrepreneur Riordan Maynard – joined two UK returning citizens, Aaron White and Maj Mohamed, to share their experiences of incarceration, rehabilitation and life after prison.
The event, co-hosted by rehabilitation charity Key4Life, comes as questions around the UK’s stretched criminal justice system are once again dominating the headlines. With the government now estimating that 4,500 extra prisoners will be released in tranches between October 2026 and June 2027 to create much-needed prison capacity, the need for effective rehabilitation and employment pathways for those leaving prison has never been more urgent.
Adrian Cox, CEO of Beazley, said: “I’m passionate about supporting Key4Life as I believe by looking beyond convictions and recognising potential, City employers can transform lives while strengthening their organisations’ access to committed and resilient talent.”
Sushovan Hussain, the former CFO of British technology company Autonomy, who since his release has founded Liberatus, helping prison-leavers find employment said: “Companies can benefit massively from the untapped talent pool in prisons. Rehabilitation depends on employment and if you can give employment to prison leavers they will have another chance to rebuild their lives.”
Eva Hamilton MBE, Founder and CEO of Key4Life, who presented the charity’s innovative 7-step rehabilitation programme at the event, said: “Rehabilitation can’t stop at the prison gate – employment is one of the most powerful crime prevention tools we have. As the pressure on the UK prison system intensifies, I urge Corporate Britain to provide more jobs and help turn rehabilitation into lasting change.”
