O2 Drive Picks Up Road Safety Award for Young Driver Insurance

Insuring younger drivers has been a long standing problem within the motor insurance sector. The biggest advance of recent years has been telematics, the so-called `Black Box’ which records driver data and has proved invaluable in many claims cases, plus helped to educate under 25s that by driving slowly and smoothly, they tend to save cash when it comes to renewal time.

Now, O2 Drive has been awarded the Best Private Sector Initiative at the FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards, marking the insurance provider’s road to success in recent years.

O2 Drive was launched just two years ago in partnership with Junction, BGL Group’s partnerships business, to disrupt the insurance sector with an enhanced telematics product that places data and the customer at its heart, with an aim to help change young driver behaviour in the UK – and the win at the awards highlights that this drive for innovation has been successful.

With a particular focus on providing the best products for young drivers, O2 Drive merges on-board technology and apps to engage the 18-24 age-group in responsible driving, rewarding the best drivers and helping others to improve.

It was this innovation that helped O2 Drive beat out the competition, which included:

  • Cambs Drive iQ, developed by Cambridgeshire County Council
  • Drivestart, developed by Agilysis Ltd
  • ‘Invention’, developed by Warwickshire Police & West Mercia Police Safer Roads Partnership
  • Speak Out, developed by Kent County Council Road Safety
  • Young Driver Programme, developed by Carmarthenshire County Council

One of the key successes of O2 Drive has been the innovative app which gives drivers constant mentoring and scoring on their driving style. The app has led to real-time improvement to behaviours of road users, with data showing that journey scores are 7.4% better amongst those who use the app vs. non-app users.

Through the app, drivers are provided with journey scores after every trip, taking in to account their acceleration, speed, awareness and time of day to create their final score. Those who are getting low scores trigger emails and SMS comms to the driver on how to improve – with driver scores increasing by over 15% after they have received these, when compared to pre-activity scores.

Whilst for those who consistently receive good scores, O2 Drive has established a Safe Driver Reward programme. Added gamification challenges drivers to get in the top 50 for different scores, with those who succeed getting a gift – such as beautifully crafted Hotel Chocolat gift boxes. More than half of customers have engaged in these programmes and scores for the initial theme, Acceleration, increased by 7% through the activity – showcasing a real-world improvement in driver behaviour.

O2 Drive Box on Board was created with a specific remit not just to disrupt the sector through mobile technology; but to actively champion road safety amongst young drivers, positively impact driving behaviour and as a result help to secure a great discount upfront with a small telematics device alongside their car battery – great for helping young drivers (17-24) get on the road.

The benefits don’t stop there, with users of the mobile app also receiving special perks all year round as part of their policy – from retail and restaurant vouchers to car accessories – whether they are an existing O2 customer or not. The app also gives customers simple, easy access to all the information they need, like emergency breakdown services, policy details and advice on what to do after an accident.
